July 29th 2020: Creating a Logo for the Online Studio

I set up an instagram account https://www.instagram.com/studio.meister/ to add some of my
pictures. As part of that, I needed to upload an image or photo, so I chose a gold bauble. From
that, the next stage was to spend a little time creating a logo for my website as all of the sites I
like had a logo. The bauble didn’t work on the site; it was a stock image that I would need to pay
for. As it was a stick image, that meant it wasn’t unique.
I used photoshop to experiment with creating logos. I started with a gold circle with the words Studio Meister and inside, I also used the initials SM.
Whilst it looked clean, it was not in keeping with the image I wanted to create, and felt it didn't look like it was for a art direction for fashion website. I also felt like the colour gold didn't translate well in flat form.
I took out the name and just kept the initals because that was easier to see when it was small. I
worked with some different colours - black and scarlet gave it a racier feel. I changed the fonts
and liked a lacy looking font. I noticed that the initials came across as S&M which was
interesting in relation to some of the potential ideas for my work being heavily sex based. I settled on a bolder and more striking font.
The fourth logo, the last one, was my favourite. I felt that the black and red was a colour palette I should utilise in the logo as I often use a lot of red in my art direction colour palettes for images. I preferred the way in which the writing was placed beneath the logo rather than inside the circle- I felt this was more modern, and gave me opportunity to split the text from the round logo if needed or wanted. The effect I used to make the font appear more raw seemed more violent to me, and reminded me of blood. I felt this was appropriate considering the online studio revolves around displaying controversial imagery.
I however wanted to exaggerate the look of blood even further, so used indesign to adapt and extend the letters away from the circle. This created a more dramatic and dynamic look which I was very pleased with. Overall I must say I really like how I made the ''o'' look like an eye, too. It hints at a call to action to look and visualise, which is perfect considering the logo is for an art direction website. I also think that the logo and font work in a very 'arty' manner together, which is coherent with my artistic art direction style.
